Speed Of Sound

The speed of sound waves in air, which is about 1090 ft./sec (332 m/s). However, the speed of sound varies from substance to substance. Sound travels faster in liquids and non-porous solids than it does in air. It travels about 4.3 times faster in water (4658 ft./sec or 1484 m/s), and nearly 15 times as fast in iron (16,797 ft./sec or 5120 m/s) than in air at 68°F (20°C).
