Root Mean Square (rms)

The square root of the arithmetical average of a set of squared instantaneous values. Digital signal analyzers perform rms averaging digitally on successive vibration spectra, frequency line by frequency line. Root mean square is an alternative method of measuring surface roughness. The value for rms is generally about 10% higher than the roughness average value for the same surface.
