Adiabatic Compression

A thermodynamic compression process that assumes no heat transfers to or from the gas during the compression cycle. The adiabatic process must occur rapidly without any flow of energy in or out of the system.

Adiabatic compression processes obey the following thermodynamic relationship:

pVk = constant

where p is pressure; V is volume; and k is the gas’s ratio of specific heats.
