Flatness

A plane or surface with no elevations or depressions. Flatness is of great concern when dealing with mechanical seal faces, because their mating surfaces are separated by a gap of about 2 µm during normal operation. Light bands formed by using an optical flat and a monochromatic light source represent an inexpensive, yet accurate, technique of checking the flatness of seal faces.
