Gusset
Any number of triangular steel plates used to strengthen a piping branch connection or stub that may be prone to failure due to mechanical vibration. Gusset plates are typically fastened to a substantial stationary member by either using bolts, welding, or a combination of the two. It is preferred that at least two gussets be installed orthogonally, or at 90 degrees, to properly strengthen the branch and inhibit excessive lateral vibration. Other gusset design possibilities include using three gussets equally spaced at 120 degrees and four gussets equally spaced at 90 degrees.
