Hard Facing

The process of hardening the surface of a metal object to create a thin layer of harder metal resistant to wear, called the “case.” For iron or steel with low-carbon content, the hard-facing process involves infusing additional carbon or nitrogen into the surface layer.

Also known as Case Hardening; Surface Hardening.
