Overspeed Testing

A periodic, uncoupled test of a gas or steam turbine driver conducted to ensure the overspeed prevention system is functioning properly. During this test, the driver is purposefully operated at or slightly above the trip speed. Extreme care should be exercised during this type of test. The failure of an overspeed trip system during an overspeed event can lead to catastrophic machine failure and extreme risk to human life.
