Quenching (Metallurgy)

The rapid cooling of a hot workpiece in water, oil, or air to obtain certain material properties. This procedure is usually undertaken to maintain desirable mechanical properties associated with a crystalline structure or phase distribution that would be lost upon slow cooling. The technique is commonly applied to steel objects to increase their hardness. Metalworkers accomplish quenching by placing the heated part into a liquid or by forcing air across it.
