Rider Band

A reciprocating compressor piston is sometimes fitted with a rider band, which is composed of a low-friction material that keeps the metal piston from contacting the bore of the cylinder and causing scuffing and wear. Rider bands are generally made of a low-friction thermoplastic-type material but may be fabricated out of bronze or other materials when temperatures are a problem.
