Shoulder Fillet (Shaft)

The stresses developed near an abrupt diameter change along a shaft, such as a step, that can be greatly amplified and eventually result in a shaft failure. However, the effect of a stress concentration at shaft corners can be greatly diminished by adding a small radius, often called a fillet. Shaft radii are considered good practice in the design and fabrication of machinery shafting.
