Sums And Difference Frequencies (Vibration Analysis)

If a carrier frequency (fc) is modulated by a second frequency (fm), a sideband of fc − fm and fc + fm will be found in the resulting spectrum.

When two sine waves of different frequencies (f1 and f2) are superimposed, a new complex wave results that is composed of various frequency components. Typically, the composite wave will contain sum and difference components, i.e., f1 + f2 and f1 − f2, that are related to the two original frequencies. Components related to f1 − f2 frequencies are referred to as beat frequencies.
