Whirling (Rotordynamics)

The condition in which an unbalanced rotor bows and gyrates about the shaft geometric centerline as it rotates at or near a critical speed. Below and above this speed, this effect is very much reduced. Actual critical or whirling speeds are dependent on the shaft dimensions, the shaft material, bearing locations, etc.
