Cross-Coupled Excitation

A motion-induced force that acts tangential to a rotor’s orbit, perpendicular to bearing principle stiffnesses, and opposite to bearing damping forces. Cross-coupled forces “feed” energy into the rotor/bearing system and act to destabilize it. Cross-coupled forces are generated in tight clearance gaps, such as those related to bearings, seals, and impellers.
